Certificate of Concentration in Maritime Law

JD students may elect to concentrate in the area of Maritime Law and have this certificate noted on their official transcript upon graduation.  To receive the Certificate of Concentration in Maritime Law, a candidate must successfully complete twelve (12) hours of coursework, as described below, in addition to other listed requirements.

**Please note: Not all courses are offered every semester.**

1. Required Courses (6 hours)

LAW-L864 Admiralty I (3 hrs)
LAW-L852 Maritime Personal Injury (3 hrs)

2. Elective Courses (6 hours minimum)

In addition to the required courses, a candidate for this specialization must elect at least six (6) hours from the following pool groups:

LAW-L879   Any Admiralty Seminar Course (1, 2, or 3 hrs), including:
     Admiralty Seminar: Rights & Remedies in a Marine Disaster (3 hrs)
     Admiralty Seminar: Introduction to International Law of the Sea (1 hr)
     Admiralty Seminar: Marine Pollution (3 hrs)

     Admiralty Seminar: Admiralty Practice & Procedure (3 hrs)
     Admiralty Seminar: Marine Insurance (3 hrs)
     Admiralty Seminar: Comparative Maritime Law (1 or 2 hrs)
     Admiralty Seminar: Limitation of Liability (2 hrs)

One of the following (not both):
    LAW-L846 Seminar in Scholarly Writing: Maritime Law Journal (3 hrs)
    LAW-L898/LAW-L899 Independent Study on an approved Maritime Topic (1, 2, or 3 hrs)

3. Enrichment Requirement

The student must attend at least one, day-long symposium, conference, CLE, or other event that focuses on maritime issues (industry or legal). Note: To qualify as “Enrichment,” the event must be approved by a professor who teaches one of the Required Maritime Courses listed in Section 1 above. Examples include Loyola/U.S. Dept. of Labor Annual Longshore Conference, LSBA Admiralty Symposium, Coast Guard Maritime Industry Day, LAJ’s High Stakes on the High Seas, Loyola Maritime Law Journal’s Maritime Symposium, ABA Admiralty Disruptioning, or through one of the law school journal offerings. 

4. Performance Requirement

Students must maintain a G.P.A. average of 3.0 or better in all classes taken to satisfy the course requirements for the specialization, while also graduating with an overall G.P.A. of at least 2.50, in order for this distinction to be noted on their official transcript.
